Stephen Burns

Head Coach and Teacher Coordinator

Stephen is the Head Coach and Teacher Coordinator of the Soccer Academy at SDSS. He has a Bachelor of Education and Physical Education degree from UBC. He has his Level 3 Technical and Theory Coaching certification from UBC and is currently at the Provincial B prep level.

Stephen is well known in the soccer community, having coached the Senior Girls Soccer team at SDSS for 20 years and the Richmond FC  Premier/Selects Women’s teams in Richmond. As well, he has been an coaching youth soccer in both Tsawwassen and Richmond during this time . Stephen played soccer with the Winnipeg Fury/Vancouver 86 ers from 1989 – 1992 and previous to that he played for UBC from 1986- 1991.

Paul Bahia


Paul is one of the  Coaches for the Soccer Academy at SDSS and has been here since the beginning of the Academy. He has many years of soccer experience as an athlete, trainer and coach. Currently Paul is the Head Coach of the Surrey Youth Soccer Club, and the Coastal U-18 BCSPL boys coach. Paul played for the University of BC when they successfully won two national  championships and has been named the Canada West All Star twice. Paul has completed his National B licence this past year.

Paul is the co-owner of All Out Performance. He specializes in team technical training, personal training and SAQ (Speed, Agility and Quickness) training. The Soccer Academy is fortunate to have Paul on the coaching staff.

Martin Bittengl


Martin has been a great addition to the Soccer Academy this past year.  He played professional soccer for the FC Vitkoria Pilsen U23 Professional Academy in the Czech Republic and was a member of the U15, U16, and U17 Czech National Teams. Martin has also coached at an elite level in Europe.

Martin holds a UEFA “A” License and has two Masters degrees; one in Physical Education and Sports and the other in Psychology, Physical Education and Sport Science.  If you are looking for additional supplemental training after school Martin is owner of  The Martin Bittengl School of Soccer.

Niko Marcina


Niko is an experienced and passionate soccer coach, as well as a strength and conditioning specialist.  He played for UBC Men’s Team, leading them to two National titles; he currently plays in the Vancouver Metro Premier Soccer League. Niko is currently helping coach at the University of Fraser Valley with the women’s program and coaches two BCSPL girls teams at the U-17 and U-13 level at Surrey United.

Niko has a Bachelor Degree in Human Kinetics, specializing in Health and Fitness.  He owns and operates “Perform All Out Soccer Academy,” a soccer specific strength and conditioning company and has been the strength and conditioning specialist for the UBC Men’s and Women’s soccer program, the Whitecaps Women’s program and various local soccer clubs.  Niko also did his masters in Injury Prevention so we have been able to use his expertise in this area.

Riley Janzen

Goalie Coach/ Fitness Coach

Riley is the goalie coach for the Academy.  Next year he will be working with our goalies and working with small groups of players at a time to give them some experience in goal……..just in case.  Riley is a goalie coach at Coquitlam Metro Ford and plays in the Vancouver Metro Soccer League Premier Division with Campo Athletico.  Riley is a great addition to our coaching staff at the Academy.
